Chris is fully certified by the NWA (National Weather Association) and the AMS (American Meteorological Society). This includes the latest CBM certification (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist).

Chris is an avid trail runner, mountaineer, mountain guide, snow skier, rock climber, photographer, writer, researcher, and enjoys reading. Chris completed climbing all 55 of Colorado's 14ers in 2009 including the four major 14er Traverses. Chris says his favorite "14er' is a close tie between Capitol Peak and the Maroon Bells. Chris has climbed throughout North America including summits of Pico de Orizaba (Mexico), Mount Rainier (22,000ft in 24 hours via Emmons Glacier), Granite Peak, Gannett Peak (42 miles in 42 hours), and the Grand Teton. Many of Chris's adventures are showcased on KDVR/KWGN-TV including high definition video from Capitol Peak, the Maroon Bells, and winter ascents of Mt. Democrat and Mt. Elbert. Two of Chris's news specials earned Emmy-Award nominations.

Chris and Dr. Jon Kedrowski conduct field research year-round. They recently co-authored a scientific, peer-reviewed article, "Colorado's Dirty Snowpack", discussing the effects of dust storms on Colorado's snowpack. It was published by the NWA (National Weather Association).

The Summer of 2011 marked a "first-ever" milestone for Chris and his long-time climbing partner Dr. Jon Kedrowski. Together they completed their "Sleeping on the Summits" project where they slept on the summit of every named 14,000-foot mountain (14er) Colorado from sunset to sunrise in just 95 days. It had never been done before. The project was truly a story of teamwork, taking risks, and climbing the proverbial mountain of life. Chris routinely conducts "Mountain Meteorology" presentations at Front Range REI stores. Folks learn how to diagnose weather in the field, the nuts and bolts about mountain weather patterns, Colorado's #1 weather killer: lightning, 14er &13er weather, and valuable information on predicting weather windows.

Chris is available for public speaking engagements.

More with Chris Tomer:

Who or what has been your most memorable interview or story?

Without a doubt, interviewing Ed Viesturs. Ed is a world-class mountaineer and the first American to summit all fourteen 8,000 meter peaks without the use of bottled oxygen. Before the on-air interview I picked Eds' brain about his mountaineering career and in the process found him to be a genuinely nice guy.

If you could interview anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?

My interview time would be split evenly between my grandfather James Griffin and genius Albert Einstein.

What is the best thing about being a broadcast meteorologist?

The landscape of news changes fast but Colorado weather changes even faster! The challenge is the draw for me. Denver is a phenomenal place to live, full of friendly, outdoorsy folks. People in Denver take weather seriously, and they look to us for accurate forecasts to plan their hikes, ski trips, and boating adventures.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I can cook! (But don't tell anyone.) My signature dish involves pasta.

What is one thing no one would ever guess about you?

I'm addicted to endurance sports. Nothing erases a bad day like a 10 mile trail run or summiting a 14'er, although watching "24" with my dad comes in a close second.
