CANTON, Ohio—
As mom and dad rest and recover at Mercy Medical Center, they are still coming to grips with how the newest addition to their family came into the world."Couldn't move," said Kassandra Smith-Humphries, the mother of newborn Elana, "Could not get down the stairs."
On Friday night, Kassandra asked her husband, Raymon, to take her to the hospital because she thought she might have her baby.
Raymon Humprhies thought his wife had plenty of time. "I'm like, 'Your water didn't even break,'" said Raymon.
Raymon got his wife down three stairs when she had to stop. Suddenly, her water broke. And, a moment later, Raymon was shocked by what he saw. "I'm like, 'Babe, there goes the head!'"
Kassandra gave birth right their on the stairs with no medication. "It was rough," she said.
Elana was breathing, and Raymon quickly called 911. Paramedics cut the umbilical cord.
Elana is healthy at eight-pounds and eight-ounces. Raymon is almost at a loss for words.
"This is like, I can't even put a word on it," he said, before finding, perhaps, the best word. "Amazing."
