ARVADA, Colo. -- Firefighters battled intense flames, dangerously cold temperatures and ice to extinguish a house fire that started in a garage at an Arvada home early Saturday morning.
The fire was reported shortly before 4 a.m. at 7122 Swadley Court. The homeowner told FOX31 Denver they kept an electric blanket in the garage and a natural gas heater running to help keep the family cat warm.
According to Arvada Fire spokesman Scott Pribble, the flames quickly spread into the attic. Two nearby houses were also evacuated due to increasing concerns of the rapidly moving fire.
“The three adult residents of the house were able to escape after waking up to the sound of their smoke alarm,” said Pribble. “The home sustained extensive fire damage to the garage and roof.”
The cat perished in the fire. No other injures were reported.
