DENVER -- A Denver police officer has been suspended for four days for using excessive force against a suspected shoplifter in a 2007 incident that was captured on surveillance camera.

The video shows Officer Kevin Guzman slamming the suspect’s face into a wall and then wrestling him to the ground.

The incident happened at the Kmart at Broadway and Alameda.

FOX31 first received the videotape in May 2011 and we promptly handed it over to Denver Police.

DPD’s Internal Affairs investigation was slightly hampered by the fact that the victim was not identified and neither were store security members who can be seen on the tape.

One IAB made their findings known to the Manager of Safety and the Police Chief, a four day suspension was handed out for excessive force.

Guzman plans to appeal the suspension to the Civil Service Commission.
