DENVER -- A 6-month-old Shar Pei stolen from the Maxfund Animal Shelter earlier in the week was returned Sunday morning.

"[We're] so delighted that the story was successful," said Maxfund spokesperson Chelsea Manschot.

A man and a woman walked into the shelter Wednesday afternoon and claimed to be volunteers who forgot their badges.

The shelter gave them temporary identification badges and the alleged thieves were able to gain access to the small dog room.

Surveillance video captured the pair leaving with a Shar Pei puppy named Nick.

Manschot says the woman in the video allegedly gave the puppy to her mother.

After the mother learned the dog was stolen she returned the puppy and asked if there was a way to legally adopt the dog.

The shelter said it will address the question later in the week. No charges were filed.

"We're just glad to have the puppy back," said Manschot.
