Threat of heavy snow sends shoppers into a frenzy
DENVER -- Impending winter white snowballs into worries at Denver-area grocery stores.

"Everybody is in a rush. You can tell everybody is hyper, tense. Everybody knows the storm is coming," says Bob Wittrig, shopping at the King Soopers at 2750 S. Colorado Blvd.

A crush of shoppers means traffic jams inside the store—and out.

"You can't get through the aisles," says grocery shopper Kristen Schuldt of Denver. “They need stoplights in some of the aisles,” she laughs.

"People were a little rushed getting in here, a little rude parking," says shopper Shauna Silber.

Shoppers pick up the basics.

"Typically, what they are doing is stocking up on staples. You are going to see them hit the milk, the bread," says King Soopers’ spokesperson Kelli McGannon.

They also snatch all the celery, pick over the pears and acquire a lot of eggs.

Shoppers say they don't want to deal with an empty fridge when streets are full of snow.

"So I don't have to go out if I don't want to. It's kind of a free day if you can stay in your sweats. You're home safely with your kids. It's great," says Kerri Mosher, whose shopping for three kids.

The demand is high not just for food--but the carts to put it all in.

"There were no carts here," says one man who was approached by another man who wanted his cart. Shoppers are also making a run on gasoline.

Drivers waiting sometimes four deep at the Costco pumps in Lone Tree.

"I know there's a storm coming and I wanted to fill up my tank so I wouldn't have to deal with it in the next couple days. Any extra stops are going to be a pain," says driver Dezireh Azarian.

So food flies off the shelves, in anticipation of flakes flying, and concern they won't melt for a while.

"Could be 14 to 22 inches in Denver," says Schuldt.

"I heard it going to be one of the worst ones," says Wittrig.

King Soopers doesn't anticipate running into any food shortages. The only way that could happen is if the interstates closed and their trucks couldn't make deliveries.
